Excellent!!! This is still probably the most fascinating and useful audiobook I've ever listened to. I've listened to it multiple times now over the past few years. It's extremely valuable for evaluating any and all phenomena and shows us how to keep our own ideals and beliefs in check while doing so. For me personally, this book has definitely helped me not fall prey to my own confirmation bias as much and has given me the tools to more objectively think and research. I truly think this should be a mandatory starter course for all science majors and that this teaching is missing from most curriculums.

This comment is mostly a rebuttal to the one about acupuncture and PSI. That comment claimed that the author was biased, and fell prey to the very logical fallacies he presents in the course. I almost didn't buy this book because of that comment, but I'm very glad that I did. I think it's great, so much that I'm buying another copy for a friend.I just finished listening to the audiobook today. I've been listening to it over the last two weeks. I do not recall the author ever definitively stating that any field was pseudoscience or that any theory was a conspiracy theory. In fact, he said that there is a continuum between science and pseudoscience, not a sharp border. He did raise concerns about many fields and theories, like PSI and acupuncture.The main point of the whole lecture was to learn how to think, not what to think. In fact, he even states at the end that ironically you must remain skeptical about even what he presented in the course.If you're looking for an in depth examination of acupuncture, PSI, or UFO's, this isn't the book for you. He gives examples of those topics and many others, and describes how to think critically about them. He doesn't give an in depth treatment of any of those topics in an effort to defend a position on them.He does give an in depth treatment on critical thinking. If you're looking for a book on that topic, this one is GREAT!

Professor Steven Novella does a great job of narrating this material. He's a delight to listen to and I found myself excitedly looking forward to each new chapter. His material on this subject is insightful and comprehensive. This really should be part of every high school curriculum. It's that important!

Dr. Novella's style is not suave and flawless, but that's fine - he's an accomplished critical thinker and science-based medicine expert. He put together a very accessible series of lectures that is bound to make the open-minded listener wiser. If you want to wade in to modern debates about vaccines, cults, the pharmaceutical industry, or simply be a conscientious consumer, spend 12 hours on this tutorial. Just learning about cognitive biases and logical fallacies is worth the price of admission. A laudable job.

This course was fantastic. It overturned many of the ideas I had about memory and eyewitness testimony, and it taught me how to be more careful of my own beliefs and biases.Great stuff. Everybody should listen.

As a middle school library media specialist, I knew I’d need to choose sections of this factual, comprehensive, and important book to read aloud to my students. We ordered this book to support our students involvement in the Peace Crane Project. Our students have joined the almost 2 million students from over 100 countries in an effort to make connections in our quest for a more peaceful world.This book is authored by Sue DiCicco and Massahiro Sasaki, the older brother of Sadako. They had assistance from a translator. The format is chronological and has important elements that will engage children.The detailed account of the atomic bomb, its devastation, and aftermath draw students into what happened to the people that experienced it. Sadako is further described as a competitive student athlete who was popular with her peers. My students were glued to their seats while I read aloud sections to them. If you read the book to younger students (grade 5 and younger), you may want to temper some of the descriptions of injuries (p. 31). That is a judgement call as the horror is real and not gratuitous. Another suggestion: you may want to substitute “mother” and “father” in place of their names while reading. I find that helps me as I’m reading aloud and the students as they didn’t have their own copies of the book. I am buying 5 more copies so that there is a copy is all grade 8 classrooms.This book should be in all middle and high school collections. Families would also appreciate discussing this book. It is the perfect resource to build background knowledge and interest if you’re considering doing anything around the United Nations Peace Day, American History, etc.

A very heartfelt and inspiring story, filled with a unique perspective of a tragic moment in our world’s history. The little details allowed me to be instantly transported to the fated Hiroshima and felt a part of the Sasaki family’s lives. In a time surrounded by suffering, it becomes so important to remember how valuable Hope can be, and to always believe. It is well-written, informative, and successful in translating such a sad but beautiful account of self-sacrifice and love. It was very difficult not to become attached to this memory of Sadako and how she had touched (and continues to touch)so many lives. After reading this book, I felt a need to share it with others and immediately bought a copy for my mother. This story is meant to be shared with the world. It grips the reader on a strong emotional level in a very personal rendition of the famous tale, inspiring courage while reminding us all of the importance of Peace.

I heard the story BUT I NEVER KNEW! !I had no idea a trip to Hiroshima would effect me the way in which it did; I mean I grew up hearing about it, like many my age, my Father was a WW II vet. It was just something I grew up with, then as an adult and I started to travel, I ended up working at Los Alamos and my interest was sparked even more. I went to Hiroshima I guess to see the end result of "America's Great Scientific Experiment" BUT I GOT MUCH MORE THAN I EXPECTED. I was sicken with what happened and then how 'the great scientific experiment' continued on with the survivors of the attack!Out of this was a little baby, a young girl; Sadako Sasaki, who lived and grew and started a movement which I hope to continue for the rest of my life- - all about Love, and caring for others.I have given many copies of this book away to friends to help continue this tale and story so that we can all learn from it.I can not recommend it enough.

As an adult learner, this book was perfect to learn to play the cello. Each song is a little harder, but still very doable. I would definitely recommend buying the CD, it was very helpful to hear how the song should be played. The only reason I rated this a 4, was because I think the songs should be included with book (like most others).

Great book for advancing beginner cellists! The book has some great songs, too. However, there are finger numbers on every note. our cello teacher doesn't recommend this for a beginner cellist's first book because they might learn to read the finger numbers, not the notes.

I finally at book 3 and all the songs are very easy to listen. I love all suzuki book even my teacher isn't following suzuki method (I am adult). Highly recommended for any beginner. Overall I love this product.

our daughter needed this for her level one cello NYSSMA solo, and it is a nicely made book, pretty small number of pages, but nothing terrible. still worth 5 stars, as i was not expecting a huge book. it's got a nice cover and a nice assortment of pieces for her to learn and practice with.hope this was helpful, please give me a thumbs up to let me know!!

Nearly everyone studying the cello uses this method for good reason. Under the guidance of a good cello teacher, this book and the accompanying CD are basic to learning to play the cello.

I have used Suzuki violin and cello books for many years. I'm grateful for them. I personally believe that the method is superior to others.

Book isn't bad, but if you are completely new you will most definitely need some supplementary material to help you with learning music and fingerings. I recommend the Essential Elements 1 for cello as I think it is a bit better for beginners.

Purchased this book with my cello. I am new to this and am trying to teach myself to play. The beginning of this book is pretty good in explaining how to play certain notes. Quickly it moves into more complex instruction without explaining where to finger for the notes. But I am so new that the beginning is still good enough for me.

"What Stays in Vegas" is a good read about the collection and use of personal data. The main thread of Adam Tanner's book is the well-known tale of Gary Loveman's unlikely ascendancy to the top of the pile at what was then Harrah's (now Caesars). Tanner got access to Loveman and his top ring of executives and makes good use of it. He details in clear, rich detail how Caesars compiles information on its customers, how it crafts offers and how uses that data/offer mix to attempt to optimize profit. As Taner notes, "The best businesses give consumers a choice whether or not to share their data, and offer benefits in return. The trick for executives is to strike the right balance when offering incentives."Should we be put off by the fact that Caesars ultimately filed for bankruptcy? I say "no." That outcome was more a reflection of peak-LBO overreach by owners Apollo and TPG rather than any failings by the Loveman team. The level of debt service required post buyout just never made a lot of sense. And, any proposed trajectory to profitability were supremely and fully wrecked by global financial crisis of 2008/09.Other standout parts of the book are the passages concerning the various businesses that have sprung up around collecting and using personal information. I especially liked Tanner's reporting on Busted Mugshots, whose aggressive business model centers around collecting and posting jail photos, then removing them for a fee. Though clearly demonstrating a distaste for the practice, Tanner credits Busted for "becoming a leader in a field where the major players typically stay hidden, their stories unknown...[founder Kyle] Prall at least had the courage to tell his story in depth and in plain sight, unlike most of the others who traffic in damaging personal data." Indeed, Tanner's pages spent with Prall make for fascinating reading.

Thought I would find the use of personal data compiled by Caeser's Palace as a means to improve the client experience and retention interesting and did. Not quite the "insight" I was looking for in terms of gaming the system to increase the freebies (Not hard - bet more, lose more!). The book veered from the Vegas emphasis into the role of data brokers in today's economy and the issue of privacy and ethics as it relates to data disclosure and use. Interesting book, but a bit on the basic side; a bit more specificity would have been helpful.

Topical. Well-researched. Some interesting and instructive observations on how "big data" is collected and used, both by company's we grant our permission to, as well as those we don't - or perhaps don't know we are. Some maybe not-so-obvious "problems" with all the collection, and concerns about whether it's all accurate and in context - and challenges getting it corrected when it's not. Couple chapters do kinda' run a little long and a couple points leave have you wondering how they're connected when you read, but it's all summarized and pulled-together well. Even if you are aware of all these things and none leave you surprised that this type of thing is happening, when you put it all together like this and see its' connectedness and scope, it leaves you pondering and maybe a bit disconcerted about how hard it is to keep prying eyes and marketers outta' your personal business.

Tanner's book is no theoretical text or manifesto. It's a practical, balanced guide on the increasingly important issue of data privacy, something that I've touched on in my own work. Tanner dispels the myth that privacy is a binary and rightfully calls out companies that obfuscate, primarily through byzantine end-user agreements.

As a professor of marketing today, and having been in the profession forever, it is interesting to see where companies are taking this form of marketing intelligence gathering. The future of marketing and marketing research will lie not only in asking consumers questions, but also in listening to them on social media and observing the consumer through all the sources of big data. This is all about one companies amazing use of big data.

Tanner writes a thoroughly researched work that touches on a wide range of data gathering and privacy issues in a surprisingly fun and engaging manner. I particularly enjoyed his newspaper journalist investigative style and willingness to aggressively reach out and ask tough questions that were both illuminating and entertaining. I confess that despite having a great interest in this subject, I expected the exposition to be extraordinarily dry and painful. To my delight, it was so good that after reading the first quarter of it for free as a kindle book borrowed from the library, I decided to purchase it and recommend it to a colleague, who also loved it!

I found this riveting - even though it spooked me a bit - made me even more conscious of how our "privacy" is compromised everywhere we turn.I thought it was well written, and the narrative held together.Don't read this if you are feeling paranoid!

Good book, easy read, well-supported conclusions. The author breaks down the data from his website and draws a few conclusions about societal propensities. Very enjoyable and easy to read!

Do you love cats? Do you love art, plays, or movies? Do love annoying your husband with obnoxious cat items? Do you want something that will start conversations about cats, so that you can then excessively talk about your marvelous cat. Then, this book is for you. :)I really enjoy this book. I like art, but not enough to know the details about it. I learn a little about art but all the pictures have cats so it's silly and interesting enough for me to keep looking.

I've been a fan of Herbert for some time. Her creative use of cats in famous paintings is both educational and entertaining. This is a real treat for shose who love art and cats. I also highly recommend Fat Cat Art by Svetlana Petrova who photoshops her cat into paintings instead of Herbert's technique of substituting cats for people. My only complaint is with shipping on this item: it came in a box with other books and without adequate padding. As a result the dust jacket was torn on arrival. I'm not going to knock down the rating on a great book for shipping problems but I did want to mention it. (That's a pet peeve of mine: people who love a book but who give it a bad rating for another problem unconnected with content. Some don't read all the reivews to see that the reason book X only got three stars is because the Kindle version was formatted oddly or whatever.)

Susan Helbert’s books are by far the best things I’ve ever found related to cats. I originally bought Shakespeare Cats and loved it so much I went online and bought every single book she’s ever published. I was a little bit upset when I realized this particular volume has collections from four others, which I’ve also purchased. I didn’t read the description, which says illustrations are taken from Shakespeare Cats, pre-raphaelite cats, opera cats, and movie cats. But honestly the book is so beautiful, especially without the dust jacket, that I don’t mind that the illustrations in this book are from the others I also purchased. I would however like verification on whether there are any illustrations in this volume that are new, not found in the other books?

I saw this book in the bookstore at the Mauritshuis Museum in the Hague which houses the Girl with the Pearl Earring painting. The cat with the pearl earring on the cover immediately caught my eye, and I had to laugh. I didn't want to carry the book back with me and suspected I could get it on Amazon, which I did upon my return. I'm giving it to my future daughter-in-law for Christmas who is a cat and art lover....

I purchased this book as a gift for a cat-loving artist friend. The works depicted are fantastic. The cats selected are great. A perfect gift for a an artistic cat lover.

As a person who loves both art and cats, I have to say that this was a fantastic purchase. The subject of this book is works of art that contains anthropomorphized cats instead of the original humans. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and feature the original names of the art and artists.

I showed this to all of my "Art" friends, and they loved it too. I can't believe how Susan was able to get the facial expressions "just right." Take a look at the cover for example. Given her experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria (1963 and 1965), Professor emerita, Renate Schulz, returned to West Africa (2011-12) to serve the Malian people, less a stranger than a newcomer. The series of journal entries that constitute her account of life in alien territory ranges from the initial departure for Mali with twenty-three young American volunteers to the grueling pre-service training in very humble surroundings, where the author acquired the name "Salimata Diarra," her work with students of English and an English Language Club, instructors of English at the Art Institute in Bamako, and attempts at understanding and speaking Bambara. Serious problems with a number of living quarters, including theft, pleasant conversations with Malians and cheerful participation in local customs, such as a colorful and moving wedding reception, and a host of encounters that most of us will probably never experience populate this well-written narrative. Westerners will be struck by the destabilizing loss of time, individualism, and initiative and the contradiction between "let's start right now" and the Malian "insha Allah approach." The "unsettling shock" Schulz experienced between the transcultural field of "shared human experience and similar aspirations" and numerous intercultural encounters reminded her that she was "living in alien territory" in which her "opinions, encounters, and cultural expectations" differed markedly from those in the host country. And yet, as she writes, "I have to admit that my many moments of frustration are balanced by those moments when I love the challenge, when I love the unpredictability of daily life, when I love the insights I am gaining into another culture and into myself. I feel alive `living on the edge'." Most troubling are the tradition of male dominance (forced marriage) and the practice of female genital mutilation (according to the traditional view, female "circumcision") in Mali. Reason, equality, and science offer more desirable alternatives. (Parenthetically, in 1997 the highest court in Egypt decided against the imposition of the practice of FGM in government hospitals even against protestations by Islamic scholars.) While educational and political activities seem haphazard, the social life to which Malians are accustomed is still anchored in tradition. For Schulz, the future of the country depends "on changing the role and rights of and opportunities for women." The adjective, "alien," in the book title indicates not only the author's experience but perhaps also those within the country itself. There are stark contrasts between life in poverty-stricken regions of the country, members of the middle class, and those few with means, tribal authority, and political power. The author is deeply concerned about the negative effects of the predominant form of Islam practiced in Mali. Her criticisms of Islam stem not from allegiance to another faith but human reason alone, which include tongue-in-cheek invocations to Allah. Schulz' hope is for the Malian people to whom she dedicates her book. The fact that all sales are donated to support Peace Corps projects in Africa is proof of the author's heart for humanity. The book may also be understood as a testimony to the generosity, determination, and strength of many Peace Corps volunteers at no matter what age. "Life in Alien Territory" is a fascinating, disturbing, and thought-provoking read. I learned a great deal about life in that West African country as well as the author's life. The book is replete with a list of general information on Mali, a few intriguing snapshots, and a glossary of terms from the Bambara language and several loan words from French. A short bibliography of further readings, which includes Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible," rounds out the volume. I think Renate showed real courage and dedication to her assignment in the Peace Corp. Learned how poorly the volunteers were incorporated into a workable program. It had to be frustrating for someone with her capabilities. It was very inefficient and mostly unsuccessful in the culture she was expected to help. I had a hard time putting the book down.
