While doing research for my current work in progress, a historical romance set in London and Paris in 1782, I found this book and am so glad I did. Not only is it interesting in terms of how the two cities changed over time, but it's very helpful on specifics. For example, I had often wondered where a lady of the beau monde in London might grab a bite to eat while shopping. When I came across this, I was thrilled:"In 1815, Debatt's Pastry Shop in Poultry was known for serving 'sweets, soups and savoury patties' to 'ladies and beaux of delicate stomachs.' These establishments survived well into the nineteenth century, catering in particular to genteel ladies running errands in the city or shopping on their own..."For a scene set in a taverne in Paris, I found a lot in the chapter titled "The Restaurant," including specifics of what was served, what they called the establishments and who their customers might be.If you like history, you'll love this; if you want details on the cities, you'll find those, too. The chapter titles are Rough Crossings (stories of getting across the Channel), The Restless House, The Street, The Restaurant, The Dance, The Underworld and Dead and Buried.Highly recommended.
The first time I went to Europe, friends asked when I returned how I would compare London and Paris. I said that London was built for the "people" and Paris for the aristocracy, e.g., London streets often resemble cow paths, while Paris features grand boulevards. Every hundred years or so, the rulers in Paris sweep away vast tracts of middle/lower class housing and build imposing new boulevards. Thus, Paris can be more impressive and beautiful, London more humane."Tales of Two Cities" is, not surprisingly, about London and Paris - in the late 18th and 19th centuries. I could hardly wait to get my eyes on this book, since in another life I could easily have been a sociologist focusing on urban issues. Indeed, I was fascinated by the book's discussion of such aspects as streets, restaurants, houses - and particularly how each city mimicked the other in certain ways. It's as though residents of both cities were looking across the Channel to find out what the other folks were doing, then would adopt in their own ways new features as they came along. Thus, each city copied the other in some ways, but also developed differently.But each chapter was too detailed. While I liked reading about the broad trends, I got bogged down with all the examples, and eventually (less than half way through) slowed down then came to a complete stop. I truly did learn a lot about contrasting developments in the two cities, but didn't feel I needed any more proof of these trends.
More than expected. Highly appreciated. The book is brand new without any bends or tears.... I hope to maintain the standard for the furure orders.
The author is pretentious and is constantly throwing in french words for the hell of it.
