this book is what I would consider an oldie but goodie. It's an older book in getting harder and harder to find, but it is still one of the best "introductions" to fiction writing I have seen. I am currently a Masters level student studying fiction writing. I have been studying and doing creative writing for, oh my God, 11 years now. I have either used or seen an awful lot of guidebooks like this one. Old though it may be, this is still one of the best hands down. Every beginning writer should own it and read it! You should also keep it at your desk while you are working on your stories, especially your early ones. It can help you critically analyze your early drafts or outlines.
Very helpful, well-written and accessible. I loved the fairly extensive practice assignments after each chapter to help the writer really grasp what is being taught. I can see why this has been a top seller and as a writer, when there are so many junk "self-help" writing books out there, it's nice to see something solid, useful and not "pop" instruction. You will not regret this purchase if you are trying to improve your writing!!
Although the book's copyright was 1999 and doesn't show a reprint, this book was more valuable to me than the dozen or so books I have accumulated on writing fiction. Having had no formal higher education in writing, his helped me to understand more clearly the good principles of fiction writing, including simple rules that help me to remember. In a 243-page book, he clearly and succinctly explained the several important categories of good fiction writing, provided samples of famous authors to further illustrate each category and then set out several exercises to stimulate a writer's creative brain-matter, plus defining the value of such exercises. I have trouble extending my fiction writing sufficiently to showing rather than telling and extending scenes to stimulate a reader's entertainment. His exercises forced me to concentrate on the value and validity of using proper metaphors, strong verbs, and body language to paint my verbal dramas. It definitely is a writing tool to show, not tell and it is so easy for the neophyte writer to simply narrate.I highly recommend this book as an initial writing tool and also a good reference to keep at hand when a writer becomes buried and at an impasse with any of the critical features of good fiction.
This is a great book for serious fiction writers. It's the book my teacher is using for his class, and he is a many-times published writer. I very highly recommend it.
I'm so glad I got this book. I've just started going through it, and it's already helping me get past my writer's block. Not all of the exercises fit with the genre I write in, but I've been following the propts anyway and every one of them has helped me work my way through to ideas that are appropriate for my story. Even the things in this book that seem totally unrelated to anything in my story's world have helped me to try to look at my story from new angles. I'm getting something written every day, which is more than I could have said before I started using this book.
This book is an excellent tool for fiction writer's. I wish I had known about it before I wrote my first novel. After attending several writer's workshops and taking creative writing courses, and learning much from all of them, I still find that this book has taught me the most! Mr. Novakovich uses many different sources to illustrate writing at its best. The exercises are time-consuming, but truly help develop your craft as a writer. It is written in a friendly and engaging style with plain, easy-to-follow instruction and a means in which to test your improvement. I love this book! Thank you, Mr. Novakovich.
I learnt a lot from this book. All books on learning the art of creative writing should have exercises. It is a challenge. I only did the first couple of exercises for each chapter. He expects a heavy workload - maybe too much. But... I promise, if you do the exercises you'll get you novel done. It.... is as valuable as a workshop at the writers centre, and you'll save four odd hundred dollars. I recommend this book.
I initially bought this book on the kindle due to the cheap price, I won't lie, but as I read the book, I grew to like it more and more. It is very helpful for those who want a breakdown on ways to better writing their stories, and the stories used as examples were great! Well worth the buy if you take a class that requires it, or want a helpful book for a relatively cheap price to better your writing.
