Purchased by school district. Didn't hear any complaints from the teacher (and I would), so assume all's good.
Detailed, engrossing,and informative...captures the spirit and figures of the time.
Disappointing. I realize now that the book was written for children and I should have realized before I picked it up that it was not going to have as much as I wanted to learn. I wanted to know more about what really motivated McCarthy. I also wanted to know more about the lives he destroyed along the way. I suppose it is a good enough book for an adolescent with an interest in mid-century politics.
An excellent overview of an individual I with whom I became acquainted during my early high school years. I am approximately the same age as the author.
I was disappointed to discover that this book is for young adults. There's nothing worn with that, but it is not clearly or prominently indicated, so the possibility that this was a book for a high school curriculum never occurred to me
I had no idea this book was geared to young people and I found it fascinating and entrancing throughout. Careful selectivity and superior organization show that the character traits of his early years (enormous ambition, hard driving energy, addiction to falsifications & taking chances, love of bluffing/gambling, twisting the truth like silly putty) were carried through in his adult life. A major triumph of the narrative is the real sense of snowballing support for McCarthy's witch hunt, of the panic and paranoia that gripped the nation and cowed the highest officials in government. We feel it building up as we read --- it's like entering a time machine and personally experiencing the fears and menaces of his endless investigations. Giblin orchestrates the build up beautifully and the final hearings that undid McCarthy are the exciting capstone of Giblin's lucid organization and sense of drama. A useful epilogue gives a synopsis of the lives of Roy Cohn and others until their deaths. It's fascinating that Roy Cohn built a solid law career serving the rich and powerful such as Donald Trump, several Mafia figures and the Catholic heirarchy of a major city. This is a tobaggan ride from start to finish and I can't imagine it being done better. It's both a gripping introduction for newcomers and a masterful summation for those who lived through the period.
Regardless of whether one believes Joe McCarthy was a total nut-case or a near prophet, or anything in between, this book will be a good addition to one's history collection if politics is of interest. I did find it a bit troubling that the majority of references were to a previous biography of McCarthy by Thomas C. Reeves, as well as numerous Wikipedia references. Some may not find the latter particularly troubling, but it seems to be too fluid to be useful as a definitive source for factual material. Clearly, however, the author did a great deal of study for this book, and presented the material in a readable fashion.At the same time, I found a concluding "prediction" to be so very ironic these days, both because the advance copy of the McCarthy book I received was only published in December 2009, and also because of what I'd consider a rather naive statement, especially given not only recent political events, but also what the nation endured with McCarthy and others in between. In his epilogue, the author contemplates the possibility of the rise of another "leader who claimed to have the answer." His conclusion? "Thoughtful Americans, however, would probably question and challenge the new leader's simplistic solutions, especially if they conflicted with the Constitution and its Bill of Rights. ... One thing is certain: Our democratic form of government, with its checks and balances, has survived serious assaults in the past. With luck, and the attentiveness and dedication of its citizens, the nation and the principles on which it relies will continue to prevail." In light of the current and just-past administrations, at minimum, such a statement seems exceptionally naive, if not detached from the reality we've witnessed these past several years. It could leave some of the author's other conclusions in the book a bit suspect.Still - if you want to get a relatively clear idea of what McCarthy was about, this is a good entry point at minimum. It's just not without bias, and it certainly isn't the definitive piece on Joe McCarthy.
