Review

“The book deftly combines memoir and history, and includes many full-text articles from the New York Times's coverage of the period.” ―VOYA“* This powerful complement to the civil rights canon draws a compelling line from the beginnings of the movement 'to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which opened the door to the long corridor that led to the White House in January 2009.” ―Booklist, starred review“* Informed and passionate.” ―School Library Journal, starred review“This gracefully written history affirms the importance of the struggle, the difficulties, and the efforts of so many, echoing an Obama campaign statement, ‘I stand on the shoulders of giants.' ” ―The Horn Book Magazine“* Emotionally engaging, eye-opening, and thoroughly accessible, this historical memoir (published in association with the New York Times) illustrates how the personal becomes political by placing the author's individual battle for equal education in the context of the larger civil rights movement.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

This is supposed to be a children's book--maybe young adult--but I think it is a good book for anyone. Hunter-Gault's story is embedded in the whole Civil Rights Movement, with much on Dr. King, but also--and this is important--John Lewis. For the information on Lewis and on the Freedom Riders, I loved this book. It has great photographs, news articles, a timeline and a solid index. It is a good investment.

I loved the personal story of her civil rights journey which also included information of the National Civil Rights Struggle. She and Holmes should have more than a campus building named for them. This should required reading in all 8th grade Georgia History classes. Students both black and white (etc.) take for granted the simple process of applying to colleges. Kudos to CHG and thank you for making it possible for me, my sister and millions of others to become Georgia Dawgs!

Purchased to be fully-prepped to attend author's talk. Honored to Meet Ms. Gault and to feel and understand her experiences.

Excellent. Well respected journalist
