I was at first apprehensive about this book due to it's numerous pages and to some extent, the topic, Queen Victoria. I had scant knowledge about her prior to reading this book, and basically only knew that the "Victorian Period" was named after her. Being an American, knowledge of European monarchies is practically non-existent for me. I chose this book to review to help me get a better understanding of the Royal Family and hopefully some inside, little known information about it. This book delivers on that.I don't want to bore you with a long dissertation, so I will keep this brief and to the point. I found this book fascinating. It brought Queen Victoria to life for me, and I was given a strong sense of the tender/strict/passionate/creative/harsh and very human nature of her. Many previously unknown facts and details are given by the author that I find very believable. One bit of personal information were the strong feelings Queen Victoria felt for Prince Albert and her tremendous grieving when he died. Chapter 14 holds a special place in my heart. The author used extensive resources and went to great lengths to write an accurate as possible biography of this Queen. He mentioned that the lack of much of her personal letters were probably destroyed by her children not so much to keep her personal secrets safe, but to keep the unflattering comments about them, in particular, from becoming public knowledge. I believe he did an excellent job of researching and this book fully deserves 5 stars.

I’ve long been a fan of Victorian fiction—Dickens, Hardy, and the like. If I’m being honest, however, I knew very little about Victoria herself. I decided to read this book to remedy that shortcoming. Filled with information, it certainly fit the bill.I don’t know what impact a book like this would have on a Brit or someone more familiar with the monarchy but, as an American, I found the insight in the world of the queen at least as interesting as the particulars of her life. As a long-serving transitional figure between the absolute monarchy and the constitutional monarchy, Victoria’s general disinterest in being a public figure while expecting public monetary support and public respect in a world where monarchies were tumbling was often a challenge. Her relationships with her many Prime Ministers—some friendly and some less so—and how she influenced domestic and foreign policy were quite amazing. And, of course, her private relationships are of endless fascination. Her isolation as a child bordered on abuse while her ascension to the throne as a teen could have been a disaster but she managed to find her way. Her marriage with Albert, while as political as any aristocratic marriage, appears to have grown into a real love match. Certainly, they had no problem producing children and she appears to have fallen into a real depression at his early death. Her relationships with her children are also interesting, in that she seems to have treated them more as subjects than as her offspring. There certainly seemed to be a lot of criticism and “playing favorites” that one often finds with strong matriarchs, which often leads to problems. It’s an important area, however, considering how many of her offspring came to dominate European politics for a time.Wilson deals with Victoria’s relationship with John Brown with a decided lack of prurience, which is great. He notes her strong attachments and opinions and the embarrassments they caused the family (to the point where much of Victoria’s diaries were destroyed by her children). He also discusses a relationship with Munshi Karim, an Indian favorite who replaced John Brown in many ways after his death. I had never heard of this person before and learning of him gave a lot of insight into Victoria’s loneliness. In the end, it is hard to do justice to such a long life and reign, even in a book of this length. Some many names go by, so many people are born and die, it’s hard to keep track of it all if you’re not already familiar with the era. Still, even getting a glimpse into the world of Victoria and the woman herself is a pleasure worth having.

This book is a superb psychological and political biography of Victoria. It skips over many details in her life and is not an account of her day-to-day existence and family life so much as it is an overview of the various periods in her long life. It's very astute and interesting, well-written. If you want to read of her personal life in detail, another bio would better suit that requirement. I have read a great deal previously about Victoria, her family, her times and its culture, so this was a great addition to my knowledge of the period and the person who dominated it.

When asked who in history I would love to meet, I now have an answer. Queen Victoria. This is a well balanced biography and Wilson never minimizes her faults, but then the Queen, being scrupulously honest, never did either. Sure she was cantankerous and tempestuous, but she was also funny, unaffected, passionate, expressive, affectionate, generous, and totally lacking in prejudice. She loved intensely and truly understood her people, for whom she always worked exceptionally hard. When I think of how hard it was to be a grieving sovereign, with no one she could truly trust to share her feelings, it makes sense that she would become so close to John Brown and Abdul, with whom she could be truly herself without the trappings of royalty. And she stood her ground for what she needed. She may not have always been easy to get along with, but she's remarkably easy to love.
