the newborn baby is a sinner. it cried. it wants my own way it is against god. this is some of what the good news club is teaching kids. this is a scary book. it documents the right wing fundamentalist agenda to sneak into public schools and convert kids. she also covers a kabbalah attempt and a scientology attempt in L.A. As she points out the right wing fundamentalists feel if you do not accept their religion you will go to hell. They do not consider other religions such as Jews valid, they are headed to hell. But Catholics, Methodists, all the mainstream Christian churches are also headed for hell. Now you have 5 year olds telling classmates they are going to hell. Classroom aides, even teachers. And taxpayers funds pay for this. As the author points out any religion can do this but their attempts are beaten back but the well funded Christian right is very well organized to plant churches in public schools and harvest (their words) the crop of kids.
I'm not quite through with the book - but I am SOOO impressed with the writer - I believe her book should be in everyone's home (if that could be arranged!) as a warning of the authoritarian bent of the religious rights' attempt to take over through the school systems of the US. Frightening!!!
Stewart has scared the pants off this believer - in our public schools. When the Christian fundamentalist /evangelists figured out how to back-door their scheme into the public school system, they began the crumbling and ultimately intended destruction of same. If this sounds like "sky is falling" cry, read this book. You will be apalled to find that all of it is perfectly legal. Betsy DeVos is on board as well.
Superb book! What an eye-opener! The efforts of these Christians to systematically dismantle public schools, targeting everyone's children and essentially converting the schools into satellite churches along the way, is stunning. I have seen a few other reviewers complain that Ms. Stewart is "one-sided", or has an ax to grind with Christians.NONSENSE!It doesn't matter which religious group is trying to take over PUBLIC schools for their religious purposes. Any such efforts are just flat WRONG. The founding fathers were astute in their understanding of importance of separation of church and state, and Ms. Stewart has meticulously exposed the holes that the GNC stealthily blows out of that protective wall.
Very informative as it explains another facet of the right wing's war on the middle and lower classes.
Everyone who has an interest in the separation of church and state needs to read this excellent work. Stewart explains there are conservative Christian groups at work trying to influence the children in the public schools and they are succeeding as a result of recent Supreme Court decisions. It comes down to whether we want our children educated or indoctrinated.
Katherine Stewart sounds an alarm to the assault on public education by the Christian conservative Right. Their onslaught comes not as a Pearl Harbor sneak attack, but as an intrusion of stealthy snipers picking off the freedoms of our secular democracy a little bit at a time leaving it increasingly unable to defend itself. She warns that the end result could be the death of the public school system altogether and a splintering of education in America into a smorgasbord of ineffective private charters and religious schools. The outcome could leave an abandoned American middle class without access to education. The wealthy will always have educational opportunities and the Christian fundamentalists will take what's left to secure their isolation from progressive secular education. She explores the attack on American secular education by a multitude of Christian Right wing organizations that many times work in concert with legal arms to achieve their goals. The picture she paints is in frightening detail and is insightfuly written. She writes on an issue that is important to all of us. Her book will open your eyes to a cancer that lies close enough to the surface that you will begin to recognize that you seen some of things she addresses without connecting the dots. I highly recommend her book as a call to action for those who wish to see the American experience survive an attack by Christian Nationalists.
