Gr 8 Up—Kazerooni recounts his experience as a 10-year-old Iranian refugee beginning a new life at a British boarding school. Readers follow along as he adapts to being a new student: learning the English language, adjusting to British culture, and making friends. Unfortunately, he has a neglectful and abusive guardian who offers little support. During the holidays, Kazerooni is forced to work making sandwiches and live on his own in a small building. He finds relief only through infrequent calls to his mother and the kindness of his guardian's in-laws, who take him in during the holidays and provide him treats and money. When it is time to go to high school, Kazerooni wins a scholarship, but his guardian's neglect eventually leads to Kazerooni's homelessness at night even as he attends an elite school by day, forcing him to take care of himself, alone. Readers not familiar with Kazerooni's previous work may be lost at the beginning of the book, as there is no previous history presented. However, the narrative becomes more compelling as it details the highs and lows of the author's boarding school life and his eventual homelessness. He tells his story with candor, and his resourcefulness and resolve in a terrible situation are inspiring. Another great book by the author. This story is amazing and I can not believe that he went through so many terrible situations in his young life. The characters are strong and stirred up some intense feelings for me. Though this story was much more sad than his last book, it was just as uplifting, knowing that he was able to make it through such tragedy and still be successful. I read this book in one sitting it was that good. I'd love to read about the next chapter in Abbas' life and I do hope he keeps writing.
I,m as honored reading this book as I was when reading the first one. I believe it can give great hope to other people in a dire situation - if they have access to these books that is.
Not only did I love it, my 7-year-old did too. We also bought the sequel and enjoyed those as well. I wish these titles could make it onto school reading lists. Engaging, fast-paced and you root for Abbas the entire way.
Enjoyed the book so much - Tragic story with a wonderful ending.
Abbas, was forced to grow up quickly in this tearful memoir about his early childhood. His story of perseverance will encourage readers of all ages.
I really enjoy reading the story of the young boy from Iran .His story was very poignant at time,but so interesting all thru the book.excellent!
Good to know what happened after he fled his country.
