This is a superbly executed book on the famous Chartres cathedral, a gothic masterpiece which sits some 50 miles to the south west of Paris. Chartres' reputation (and its geographic proximity to Paris) assure its place as a frequent "day trip" for visitors and tourists to Paris who wish to see one of the apogees of gothic development. If you have the opportunity to visit Chartres, you most certainly will find Miller's text right in Chartres' own bookstore, as the book is truly a work worthy to be sold "on site." That fact alone speaks to the quality of this volume.Miller's text provides a short introduction to the gothic movement, as well as the background of Chartres cathedral itself. But the focus of this book is the stained glass found in the cathedral, with a window-by-window detail of the glass, its date, and the allusions each window makes to the outside world. As such, this makes the book a valuable reference work, because one can follow the story from window to window in a way that would be difficult on-site without many days of time to do so (and using binoculars to help out!). The choice of focusing on the stained glass, rather than other features present in gothic cathedrals is justified: Chartres has some of the oldest and most-intact original stained glass of any cathedral in France, and is perhaps the single item among many others for which the structure is famous. Chartres is what is called a "dark cathedral," meaning that the available light inside the edifice is relatively low, making the interior a difficult place to see the architectural elements. But in such a setting, the stained glass takes on a "glowing" characteristic that is visually dramatic. To have a book so carefully lay out the windows for review is quite an achievement.This is a paperback book done on large-size paper, but the covers and individual pages are of extremely high quality, durable, and glossy finish. The photographic reproductions are first-rate, and the graphic artwork used to present the material is also professionally developed. One flip through the volume and you'll be glad you added it to your library.
Good guidebook by a renowned guide, but concentrates mainly on the windows and the porch sculpture; Miller is not much interested in the architecture, either the technique of it or the cathedral's aesthetics. This book was written before the recent cleaning and restoration of the nave and chancel, which have fairly dramatically altered the interior balance between the architecture and the windows -- for the better in my opinion, but others disagree. In any case, if you are mainly interested in the windows, this is certainly a worthwhile investment.
I have had the pleasure of being toured around Chartres in person several times and enjoyed every single unique one. When I had the opportunity I convinced the Univ of GA School of Environmental Design to hire him as a visiting speaker a few years later. His depth of knowledge and intense love for the Cathedral and all of its artwork and history is phenomenal.
...if you are going to visit Chartres. Or if you're there, they have it at the gift shop. Even more important is to take a tour with the author onsite. He's terrific - at least I thought so. Funny, informative, and in love with the place. The book documents the knowledge he has amassed about this incredible Cathedral and place of history.
I bought this book at the bookstore within Chartres Cathedral in 2013, after being gloriously stunned with how Malcolm Miller described the cathedral. If you go there, you will be blessed if you can take his public tour!! I bought this book on Amazon to give to our Parish Priest and the power of the message and illustrations in the book are immense and awesome!
Lovely book with beautiful photos. I had a tour of Chartres Cathedral with Malcolm Miller years ago -- by far the best tour I've ever been on. Definitely get this book by him, even though it's more pictures than writing. But such beautiful pictures!
As as concise and detailed guide to the stained glass and sculpture of Chartres Cathedral, this slim volume is extremely helpful. It provides essential detail to extensive and complicated iconography and has very useful illustrations and charts. It does ot deal with the architecture and cannot, of course, be entirely complete in describing every detail of the windows, but it is of great usefulness to the visitor.
Great Book. Written by Malcolm Miller. My wife and I visited Chartres on our honeymoon and Mr. Miller gave us a tour of the cathedral. It was very enlightening. Book is highly recommended.
